A SPORTS team are hoping to regenerate a derelict Appleton playing field by installing changing rooms and replacing floodlights.
Warrington Rugby Union Football Club have submitted planning documents to Warrington Borough Council as part of its proposed improvements to the Bridge Lane site.
They are seeking to replace the existing floodlights, which they claim are no longer safe and are ‘aged’, with new stanchions and light infrastructure to light the back pitch for training and matches.
Working floodlights would allow the teams to train in the evenings.
The documents read: “The playing pitches are kept in good order and are used for practice/matches.
“However, with no lighting to site the usage is largely restricted to daylight hours.
“As a consequence, we are required to hire alternative training facilities across the borough to support our extensive playing and training requirements.”
The plans also state the team are fencing off the plinth to secure the site and are looking to install changing rooms on site – using shipping containers.
Large gates have been installed to the access road at the entrance of the fields to prevent unauthorised access and any potential fly tipping or nuisance.
According to the documents, the location has suffered from ‘persistent anti-social behaviour’, ‘petty vandalism’ and general nuisance, with the police often being called to the site.
