A DRUG driver who crashed a stolen car on a major route through Warrington town centre and fled the scene has been spared prison.

Mark Maguire was handed a 14-week imprisonment suspended for 18 months at Warrington Magistrates Court on Thursday, January 6, in connection with the incident in August last year.

The court heard that the 32-year-old took a Renault Clio before damaging the vehicle in a collision with a Volkswagen Golf on Wilson Patten Street and fleeing the scene.

He was later found to have cocaine in his system when tested by police.

Maguire, of Ellesmere Port, admitted aggravated vehicle taking, drug driving, failing to stop after a collision and driving without insurance.

The defendant was also banned from driving for four years, handed a rehabilitation activity requirement of up to 25 days and told to pay £85 in court costs.
