A PENSIONER has been left with nasty head and facial injuries after tripping over fly-tipped rubbish in the alleyway behind her home.

Jean McKeown needed seven stitches in her head and suffered a broken nose after falling over a broken dog cage dumped on Worsley Street, Bewsey.

The 79-year-old is also heavily bruised and in pain following the incident.

Jean has claimed the street has been a target of fly-tipping for around five years, with people often dumping furniture, fridges and washing machines in the alleyway.

And last Friday, Jean tripped over a dog cage resulting in a trip to the hospital after she was left pouring with blood and an exposed forehead.

She said: “It just scared me so much because I went down with such a bang.

“I want people to be aware, it is dangerous.”

Jean and her daughter often litter pick around the local area, disposing of dumped rubbish but the dog cage was too big to remove.

She believes the council need to do more to prevent fly-tipping in the area and also catch the culprits.

Jean added: “I just want the council to take a bit of notice.

“Fly-tipping is supposed to be illegal – but nobody ever does anything about it.”

A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of two previous reported incidents of fly-tipping prior to this one at Worsley Street in the past 12 months, both of which have been investigated and cleared.

“Due to repeated incidents, we have carried out educational visits to local residents, as part of a wider project, to assist them with how to store and dispose of their waste responsibly.

“We were informed of the latest fly-tipping incident involving a dog cage on Monday, though unfortunately a resident had tripped over this and sustained injuries by the time we were notified.

“We wish them a full and speedy recovery and hope that irresponsible people who fly-tip their rubbish recognise that their actions can directly affect people in the local community.

“Fly-tipping is a serious criminal offence that can result in a fine of up to £50,000, due to its impact on communities and the environment.

“We will be undertaking a full investigation of this incident and seek to take action against the perpetrator.

“Please report fly-tipping incidents to us with as much information as possible at warrington.gov.uk/flytipping.”
