THE arrival of Storm Arwen in Warrington brought with it damage and disruption.

The Met Office warned of the danger the storm could pose, issuing a yellow weather warning for strong winds in the region.

The weather warning came into force in the north west from 9am yesterday, Friday, and will remain in place through to 6pm this evening.

And after hitting the town yesterday, reports have been flooding in of trees blocking roads and damaging vehicles.

Warrington Police said: “Please be careful when travelling. There is a weather warning in place due to strong winds.

“We have had plenty of fallen trees so slow down and take extra care. The driver from this was lucky and did not have a scratch. Only make essential journeys to minimise risk.

Also highlighting the damage was Dave Thompson MBE, who is CEO of Warrington Disability Partnership.

He said: “If anyone is wondering how bad the weather is out there, here is proof just how bad it is.

“Sadly, one of our Disability Trading Company and Warrington Disability Partnership vans will not be used again.”

Meanwhile, the crew from Warrington Fire Station was called out to reports of a partial wall collapse in Orford at around 10.30pm last night.

On arrival at the scene on Arnhem Crescent, firefighters discovered the outer skin of a gable end of a house had been damaged by the strong winds.

Firefighters isolated the gas and electric supply to the house and assisted with the clear up.

Hatton, Stretton and Walton Police also warned motorists to be careful when out on the roads, posting this photo of a fallen tree on Hough Lane.

The M62 was closed eastbound from the early hours after winds caused a lorry to overturn near junction eight for Burtonwood.

Both the driver and passenger of the lorry were taken to hospital, while the motorway has fully reopened.

Storm Arwen is also disrupting rail travel, with Northern saying: “Due to severe weather conditions, services running across the Northern network will be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.”

Cheshire Police said: “If you have to be on the roads, please take care – look out for debris on the road and leave more time than usual for your journey.

“If you are driving a high sided vehicle, please avoid using our motorway network if possible.

“If you encounter debris on the road, please ring your local council's highways department.

“If you lose power, please ring 105 to let your network operator (not supplier) know. Useful information at powercut105.com/experience
