STEVE Price has secured an NRL coaching position for next season.

The departing Warrington Wolves head coach will rejoin Cronulla Sharks, with whom he won an NRL Premiership back in 2016 as an assistant coach.

He has penned a two-year deal to pick up the same role from 2022 under incoming head coach Craig Fitzgibbon.

Price will be one of three assistants to Fitzgibbon – he joins Josh Hannay and Daniel Holdsworth at the club he left to join The Wire back in 2018.

Cronulla CEO Dino Mezzatesta says Price had “plenty of options” for when his duties with Warrington end in the autumn but that he is delighted he chose to return to his club.

“Steve had plenty of options after he made his decision to return to Australia and we are thrilled he chose the Sharks over the other interested clubs,” he said.

“His credentials are second to none and the Board and management are pleased to have secured his services.

“He has expressed his excitement around the rebuild off the field and was also attracted by the roster being assembled under Craig, which made this coaching opportunity at the Sharks especially appealing.

“Steve has a place in our history books as someone involved with our winning team in 2016 and we were delighted to be able to bring him home and for him to be part of what we are building here at the Sharks.”

Price helped Shane Flanagan to mastermind the Sharks’ memorable Premiership win back in 2016 before taking the chance at a head coaching role with Warrington two years later.

After four seasons at the helm, however, he will be returning to his homeland with his young family upon the expiry of his contract.

Price confirmed his departure prior to the start of the season and with his future beyond this year now secure, he can focus fully on ensuring he departs having guided The Wire to their first ever Super League title.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Steve,” Fitzgibbon said.

“While we’ve known each other for some time, the opportunity to work together is an exciting one.

“The experiences he’s gathered and his love for the area and club were hard to ignore “I thought Steve’s experience in the NRL and in the Super League as a head coach, added to the fact he was an assistant in the 2016 Sharks premiership, would be an asset for myself, Josh and Daniel and we look forward to pushing each other and developing as a coaching team.”
