WHATEVER you think of Charlie Simpson, you have to admire his steadfast refusal to be intimidated by music critics and the rock community.

Fresh out of the boy band Busted, the mono-browed frontman shocked the music world when he made a radical U-turn into the world of alternative rock.

This was dark, unforgiving territory but Simpson and his band had one thing that rock fans weren't expecting - good songs.

On their second album, One Day Son, This Will All Be Yours, Fightstar seem to be less concerned about proving they're not a pop band and more focused on honing their sound.

Still, with song names like We Apologise For Nothing, there are still perhaps wounds to be healed.

It is also alleged that Simpson tore up his contract with his previous label, Island Records, because music bosses wanted the band to return to a pop sound.

The result is another album fuelled by rebellion with many songs building to an intense crescendo.

So forget any preconceptions you might have - Fightstar are the real deal.
