THE M6 has been closed by a serious crash this afternoon.

Emergency services shut the motorway in both directions due to an accident on the southbound carriageway between junction 20a at Lymm and junction 19 at Knutsford at around 12.45pm.

While the northbound stretch reopened at around 2.30pm, traffic in the opposite direction remains at a standstill.

Three lorries were involved in the collision, with one of the HGVs believed to have overturned.

Six fire engines have been called to the scene, and diversions are in place via the M56.

It is anticipated that the route will remain shut for several hours.

Oil and wine was spilled.

there are long delays on routes across Warrington, especially heading south on London Road and Chester Road.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "The M6 in Cheshire is currently closed in both direction following a serious collision near Knutsford.

"The incident, which involves three HGVs, was reported at around 12.40pm today, Thursday.

"The collision is on the southbound carriageway, and as result of the incident the road is currently closed in both directions between junctions 19 at Knutsford and 20 at Lymm interchange.

"Local diversions are in place, but motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

"Further details will be released when available.

"Anyone with any information or video footage in relation to the collision is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number IML1032250."
