DAVE McNabb says Warrington Rylands can take “lots of positives” from their first friendly of pre-season.

A late Warren Gerrard goal secured a 1-0 victory over Northern Premier League Premier Division side FC United of Manchester on Tuesday night in what was their first outing since winning the FA Vase at Wembley in May.

Blues themselves are preparing for their first ever NPL season having been promoted to Division One West.

Manager Dave McNabb believes playing sides like the Red Rebels will only help them in their quest to be ready for football at a higher level.

“I think there were a lot of positives to take,” he said.

“I thought FC started really well in the first half – their movement off the ball was frightening at times.

“It probably took us 20 minutes in the first half to get to grips with it and 10-15 in the second after making all the changes.

“After those two spells, it was 50-50 but overall, pre-season is about working hard, getting minutes in the legs and trying a few things out.

“We’ve done that and capped it off with the goal at the end.

“We almost played a little bit safe at times and were cautious of getting caught by their press.

“Once we did start pressing in threes and fours, we forced errors and won the ball back.

“They’re an excellent side but that’s why we’re playing teams like this – we want to learn and pick up some bits along the way.”

New signing Luke Sephton set up the winning goal as the game moved into the 90th minute, sending in a deep cross which was headed home by Gerrard at the far post.

He was one of four new additions to make their first appearances for the club – Callum Dolan and Abdul Djalo started the match while Sephton and Kyle Sambor were introduced at half-time among a raft of substitutions.

“The lads have fitted in really well,” McNabb said.

“We’re probably a little bit behind in that this was our first game after six training sessions.

“There’s more to come – it’s a work in progress but there’s lots of positives.”

Blues preparations for the new season continue with another friendly match on Saturday.

They visit Cheshire Football League side Garswood United for a 3pm kick off.
