IF you are looking for an excuse for a decadent lunch or to treat yourself this evening look no further.

Today is Burger Day and Warrington has some great eateries to choose from.

In fact the humble burger has recently been voted Britain’s favourite American takeaway, according to research by Foodhub.

A nationwide poll led by one of the UK’s leading food ordering apps revealed that more than a third of the nation (33 per cent) favour the burger over all other American dishes, with southern fried chicken coming in second (28 per cent) and deep-pan pizza rounding off the top three (23 per cent).

Ardian Mula, Foodhub spokesperson, said: “American dishes are such a staple cuisine in our everyday lives. As a nation, we regularly sit back and enjoy a meal from across the pond, whether its burgers, hot dogs or BBQ ribs."

Got you hungry for a weekend feast? Below we have rounded up some of our favourite spots for burgers in Warrington.

CAFE AT THE END OF THE UNIVERSE

The award-winning pop culture inspired burger bar has become one of Warrington's favourite eateries since launching at the market in 2017.

Former Lymm High School student Andy Kinsella leads the family business at Warrington Market's Cookhouse in Time Square.

Expect truly decadent burgers with names like Kevin Bacon and Los Pollos Hermanos. There are also regular specials which are even more wacky or experimental.

Andy has worked in catering for 20 years and got the idea for Cafe at the End of the Universe after working as head chef at Blue Dog Bar in Altrincham.

When Cafe at the End of the Universe launched, he told us: “I just think if you do a burger well people will always come back. Trends come and go and it might change how people do them and what you put on them but burgers will always be around.”

Even during the pandemic, the business's popularity soared which saw Andy team up with Just Eat for deliveries.

BROTHERS BURGERS

The award-winning ‘dirty burger’ eatery opened to sit-in customers in Bold Street for the first time in May.

Brothers Darren and Steven Leigh launched the popular brand in St Helens in 2018 and even won North West Takeaway of the Year at the beginning of 2020.

They chose Warrington because it was the ‘next rugby town along’ and liked the feel of the Cultural Quarter.

The small restaurant can seat around 30 with more than 10 types of burger to choose from as well as chicken strips, a large variety of sides and desserts.

You can also grab a beer and watch all the sports fixtures throughout the day.

BURGER JOINT

A lockdown success story, Riad and Sarah Ziadi opened Burger Joint a week into the first lockdown.

Now the Howley Lane burger, ribs and fried chicken takeaway has been shortlisted for the best north west takeaway in the British Takeaway Awards after their popular menu of comfort food was selected and voted for by Warrington residents.

Burger Joint's extensive menu includes classics like the cheeseburger and bacon cheeseburger as well as their own signatures ones like Korean chicken burger, Texas barbecue pulled pork burger and bagel barbecue burger.

THE STATION HOUSE

Formerly The Stocks, the team behind Station House completely reinvented the Padgate pub after a £250,000 transformation.

Now with a new kitchen with its own smoker, the grill house has a comprehensive menu of casual American comfort foods.

All the meats are dry rubbed to perfection while vegetarians love the buttermilk halloumi burger.

Other favourites include the Jack Daniels burger, surf and turf burger, brisket burger, salt and pepper chicken burger, Buffalo burger and chorizo burger – all with very hearty portions and lots of sumptuous side dishes available.

THE WHITE HART

This pub is a town centre favourite run by former Great Sankey High student Neil Sparkes.

It is always a busy spot thanks to its friendly atmosphere and approachable menu.

The Sankey Street pub's burgers are made from dry-aged beef and all served with a toasted brioche bun and seasoned fries – or loaded fries for an extra fee.

Their signature burger is the smash burger with double patties, chargrilled American cheese, smokey streaky bacon, ketchup and barbecue mustard gherkins.

There are also two varieties of fried chicken burger and a halloumi burger while hustler comes with two patties, cheesesteak chorizo, barbecue mustard, chipotle and Frank’s hot sauce.
