MORE than 400 new coronavirus cases were detected in Warrington in the space of a week, according to the latest figures from Public Health England.
A total of 410 positive Covid-19 tests were returned in the town in the seven days before June 18, the most recent period for which data is available.
This equates to 195.2 infections for every 100,000 residents, the 25th highest case rate in the country at present.
By comparison, in the week before June 11 there were 311 new cases recorded – or 148.1 per 100,000.
Warrington was one of 269 local authority areas in England which saw a rise in cases between these two dates, while 42 experienced a fall and four remained unchanged.
Blackburn with Darwen continues to have the highest rate nationally, with 518.4 per 100,000.
The other authorities in the top five hotspots were Hyndburn, Ribble Valley, Burnley and Manchester.
Only three places outside of the north west – Newcastle, North Tyneside and Leeds, which featured in 15th, 19th and 20th respectively – had a higher case rate than Warrington.
