THE daughters of former Warrington Wolves player and coach Paul Darbyshire are set for a charity challenge in his memory to mark the 10th anniversary of his death.

‘Darbs’ made 106 appearances for the Wire between 1989 and 1997 before becoming a part of the club’s coaching staff for the following decade.

This month marks 10 years since his untimely passing at the age of 41 in 2011, following a battle with motor neurone disease.

Warrington Guardian:

And his daughters Ella and Georgia, from Winwick, are set to remember the much-loved dad-of-four by running 10km per day for 10 days in order to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association – as well as awareness of the devastating condition, which has again been brought to the forefront following Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow's diagnosis with MND.

Their challenge will begin this Friday, June 11, before concluding on Sunday, June 20.

Ella said: “We would like to thank everyone for all of their support and their donations so far, it means so much.

“We have been training really hard and we can’t wait to get started and raise as much awareness and money as possible for the MNDA.”

The sisters, who also lost their granddad John to MND, were hoping to raise £1,000 with their efforts.

But an online crowdfunding page has already smashed that target, with more than £3,000 already donated by kind-hearted residents.

It is the latest in a long line of charity challenges in Darbyshire’s memory, with a series of cycles having taken place in the years since he died.

A 300-mile ride from Ireland, where he had latterly worked as strength and conditioning coach for rugby union outfit Munster, to Warrington came in the days after his death.

Meanwhile, Paul’s son Jack is now following in his dad’s footsteps in rugby league and is starring in Wolves’ youth setup.
