NETWORK Rail has released fascinating pictures and videos behind the scenes as two new bridges were installed at Warrington Bank Quay over the Easter weekend.
Upgrades totalling £31million were implemented along the West Coast Mainline over the bank holiday, including the major operation at Bank Quay Station.
A huge 750 tonne crane towered over the town centre while the structure was lifted into place.
The previous structure which carried two railway tracks was also removed, with a disused span filled in.
And Network Rail has now revealed a time lapse video of the construction, as well as several images of railway staff hard at work.
North west and central region managing director Tim Shoveller said: “Hundreds of frontline staff worked throughout the bank holiday to improve journeys for passengers and freight in the north west and central region.
“I’m immensely proud of them and our contractors who helped Network Rail deliver these major upgrades.
“This is just the start of 2021’s work to make the West Coast Mainline more reliable for our passengers and pave the way for HS2, which will bring much-needed extra railway capacity as the country builds back better from the pandemic.
“Now our attention turns to the early May bank holiday, when more essential railway improvements will take place.
“Because of the amount of work being done, passengers are being urged to travel either side of the bank holiday on Friday, April 30, and Tuesday, May 4.”
Further planned works include signal replacements in the Warrington area and major track renewals along the route between Crewe and Wigan.
Replacement buses were run over the weekend due to the disruption caused by upgrades at Bank Quay, with some services also diverted along alternative routes.
