PLANS to convert a former letting agents in the town centre into a micro-bar have been given the go-ahead.

This is despite objections being lodged by nearby residents citing concerns over an increase in anti-social behaviour.

The application relates to the now vacant Rent2Go.Homes unit on Suez Street, which is set to be transformed into with a ‘boutique’ beer house named ABV Bier Haus.

Applicant Michael Wilkinson, in planning documents, stated that space is perfect for use a bar to complement the night-time economy and other drinking spots in the area.

He said: “We plan on using this property for a boutique-style micro bar selling only exclusive drinks.

“The premises are within Warrington's Cultural Quarter, where there are a number of other bars and restaurants.

“I feel this little continental-style boutique micro-bar would be a great compliment to the area.”

But this view was not shared by two Suez Street residents, who objected on the grounds of a rise in anti-social behaviour from people who have had too much to drink and the disruption caused by deliveries.

One said: “I have lived on Suez Street for six years and know what it can be like on a Friday and Saturday night, with people going from the cultural quarter to the town centre or vice-versa.

“Currently, with people passing through the street in the day or at night when alcohol is involved, I see people damaging property, urinating in doorways or businesses fronts or being sick.

“I have caught two lads running over my car which was parked in front of my house – they were very intoxicated.

“I’m for the unit being used and not being left empty, but for another purpose other than a bar/public house.”

Another added: “The premises are unsuitable for a bar in my opinion as there is no parking for delivery vehicles and nowhere to put empty bottles and rubbish, other than a small yard which is shared with residential property.”

When approving the proposal, Warrington Borough Council planning chiefs added conditions restricting the times at which deliveries can be received.

Business hours will also be restricted to between midday and 10pm from Sunday to Thursday and between midday and 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
