A REGULAR coronavirus testing regime in place at two care homes in Penketh has been praised by inspectors.

Representatives of the Care Quality Commission visited both Heathside and Heathside Mews care homes last month in targeted inspections to review Covid-19 infection prevention and control measures.

Both homes share the same Honiston Way site and are run by Warrington Community Living, but are separate residential facilities with different features and atmospheres to suit different styles of living.

They experienced the devastating impact of coronavirus first-hand in April last year, when four residents sadly died in the space of a week after contracting the virus.

But inspectors have commended procedures and practices in force at the homes at present to ensure the safety of both residents and staff.

In their report, they said: “During the inspection, staff were observed wearing the correct PPE and complying with infection prevention and control arrangements.

“A regular testing regime was in place for people living at the home and staff who worked there, providing assurances that any positive Covid-19 cases were identified and managed in a timely manner.”

At Heathside Mews, which at the time of the visit was providing care for 17 people, the environment was reported to be ‘clean and hygienic’ thanks to extra cleaning schedules.

There was also a dedicated 'Covid staff champion' in place, who had received the necessary training, observed staff practices and offered support and guidance to the team.

Regular staff spot checks were conducted at neighbouring Heathside, which had 22 residents, to ensure a full compliance with IPC measures.

CQC visitors added: “People were supported to maintain contact with their loved ones during the pandemic, with different measures in place such as video calls and socially distanced garden visits.”

This was also the case at Heathside Mews, which has additionally set up a newly designed visiting pod to ensure safe contact between residents and family members.
