A DETERMINED eight-year-old has raised more than £400 to thank the doctors and nurses at Warrington Hospital who fixed his broken leg.

Oscar Green, from Whittle Hall, has since recovered from his injury and decided to run a total of 50km during the half term holidays to raise the funds.

The Barrow Hall Primary School pupil was playing football in November 2019 when he broke his leg and was taken to hospital where the Ward B11 team took care of him.

Dad Nicholas recalled: "He spend three nights in hospital.

"They couldn't control his pain and had to give him quite strong pain killers."

Oscar needed wear a cast for a total of 16 weeks and 'fought his way' through a loss of muscle mass and working up his stamina following the accident.

As part of this, he started running with his dad.

Speaking about where his son's fundraising idea came from, Nicholas said: "We were doing our Saturday morning run and he never stops talking and it was when Captain Tom had just passed away.

"Oscar asked how he had raised so much money for the NHS so I started explaining it and clearly all this sunk in."

Inspired by Captain Tom's efforts, Oscar wanted to set up his own JustGiving page and challenge himself to run five 10ks over February half term.

Alongside his dad, the promising young footballer successfully completed his challenge and has so far raised £443 for the Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

"Oscar only wanted to raise £100," Nicholas said.

"When I showed him the JustGiving page and the first bit of money went in, he was amazed - it was like Christmas had come again!"
