A WARRINGTON-based property development firm has made an offer for a recognisable building in the town centre.

Pod Property Group, which operates out of Wilson Patten Street, has submitted a bid to buy the former TJ Hughes building on Sankey Street.

Before TJ Hughes, the property was occupied by Co-op and has more recently been used as a 99p store, but it has largely been empty of late.

The whole building has not been open since the days of the Co-op department store which closed in 1997.

TJ Hughes closed its doors in 2011.

The four-storey property is on the market for £1.9million, with the listing stating that there is 'residential development' opportunity for the upper floors.

Giving an insight into his vision, Pod director Shehzad Khan, said: “When it came to my attention that a property as substantial as this had come onto the market, I had to know more.

“Now that we are in talks with the representatives, I am excited to potentially regenerate it into something fresh that will still retain its iconic character.”

Pod Group is responsible for a number of recent property projects in the town, as well as multi-million pound developments in various other locations.

After buying the Museum Street building which housed Warrington Blind Society for almost 90 years, the group submitted plans to transform it into 12 luxury apartments in February last year.

Last month, planning permission was granted to the firm to convert the historic Warrington Club building on Bold Street into apartments.

Pod also ended 2020 with an offer on the former tax office in Mersey Bank House, Barbauld Street, showing its appetite to invest heavily in the regeneration of Warrington town centre.
