A FLOOD alert issued in Warrington due to heavy rain brought by Storm Christoph has now been upgraded.

The Government’s flood information service has now issued a flood warning in Dallam close to Sankey Brook.

It says that flooding of some property is to be expected, with further rainfall forecast over the next 12 to 24 hours.

The flood alert issued yesterday, Tuesday, covering Lingley Green, Great Sankey, Sankey Bridges, Orford, Callands and Burtonwood remains in force.

The red flood warning for Dallam reads: “River levels are forecast to rise at the Higham Avenue river gauge as a result of persistent heavy rainfall.

Warrington Guardian:

“Consequently, flooding of property is expected. Further rainfall is forecast over the next 12 to 24 hours.”

Meanwhile, the amber flood alert warns: “A prolonged period of heavy rain associated with Storm Christoph will cause river levels to rise at the Causey Bridge river gauge and consequently flooding of property or roads and farmland is possible.

“We believe there is a possibility of flooding for low lying land and roads around Black, Barkers, Windle and Whittle Brooks and their tributaries.

Warrington Guardian:

“Further rainfall is forecast over the next 48 hours and we expect river levels to remain high until Friday.”

The service says that incident response staff are closely monitoring weather forecasts and river levels and will issue further flood warnings if necessary.

People are being urged to avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses, to be aware of surroundings and to keep up to date with the current situation.

Warrington Guardian:

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning in the town on Monday, with some parts of east Warrington falling under an amber warning.

Estimates state that 40-70mm of continuous rain could fall over a 60-hour period in areas covered by the yellow warning.

It is expected to remain in place through to midday tomorrow, Thursday.
