GCSE students at Great Sankey High School have celebrated a successful results day amid challenging times.

Christina Kane, deputy head teacher, explained: "Our year 11 students have worked incredibly hard for five years and we believe that, despite the cancellation of exams, the final grades they have been awarded reflect this.

"They have shown great resilience and determination throughout a very challenging period of time and we are extremely proud of them all."

Staff at Great Sankey believed that the decision by OFQUAL and the Department of Education (DFE) to use centre assessed grades (CAGs) was the right one.

The school added that its teachers used their professional judgement and knowledge of the children to make these decisions on their final grades.

Following the Government announcement on Monday, staff are now supporting a number of its sixth form students from Barrow Hall College, ensuring they are able to access their first choice university following the change in grading systems.

Like many other schools across the UK, Great Sankey High School is also awaiting a resolution around issues identified on some of their vocational courses (BTECs).

Headteacher, John Shannon, has again been in contact with senior staff at the Association of School and College Leaders to share his concerns and exam boards have been contacted for a response.

Christina added: "With the unusual build up to results, our focus over the last few days, as in all years, has been to support our students as they move onto the next stage of their education.

"Many of our students will continue to study with us at Barrow Hall College.

"Others will enter apprenticeships or continue their education elsewhere.

"Whichever path our students follow, we know they have the right skills and attributes to lead happy, successful lives and we wish them every success for the future."
