AFTER months of wondering whether their dream day would go ahead, a couple from Great Sankey has finally made it down the aisle in one of the borough’s first post-lockdown church weddings.

Daniel and Rachel Sutton, 39 and 38, said ‘I do’ on July 24 at St Mary’s Church, almost two years after meeting online.

“Initially I rejected Daniel’s approach online and told him thank you, but no thank you,” Rachel recalled.

“He was persistent and persuaded me to go on the first date.

“When I met him in person it was love at first sight and we were in the pub chatting for seven hours!

“We knew we had found ‘the one’ after enjoying many drinks and ending up with a typically English pot of tea - the tea sealed the deal!”

Daniel proposed to Rachel on her birthday, as the clock at St Mary’s church struck midnight.

Rachel said: “I did not suspect the proposal on that day and I was the happiest I have ever been.

“I had gone to bed as I had work in the morning, and Daniel’s daughter Daniella, age 10, came and woke me up at 11.55pm to say, ‘Dad has your birthday present outside’.

“I didn’t expect the down-on-one-knee proposal and engagement ring!

“We raised a toast with orange juice, wine and Guinness afterwards.”

When lockdown hit, the engaged couple were on edge as to whether they could tie the knot on their original date.

Luckily, weddings with up to 30 guests were allowed from July 4 and the pair went ahead with their special day, followed by drinks at the Chapel House Pub and a small reception in their garden.

Explaining her favourite memories from the wedding, Rachel said: “It was seeing Daniel at the alter and seeing the bridesmaids, Daniella and Eva, my niece, enter the church, followed by me walking down the aisle hand in hand with my father.

“Also, dancing the first dance on the lawn outside the church in front of friends and family we had not seen since pre-lockdown.

“Daniel then took me on a surprise trip to a five star boutique hotel in York.

“We weren’t happy to travel abroad in the current climate but it was fantastic to have a romantic mini break together in luxury.”

Daniel and Rachel are now looking forward to their future together.

“We share the same values for friendship and family, supporting each other’s goals, and to encourage one another to achieve what we each want to achieve,” Rachel said.

“We are nice to each other, don’t take each other for granted, cherish the little things and don’t get in moods.

“Why did we wanted to get married? For love and happiness!”
