TODAY should have been rugby league's showpiece Challenge Cup Final at Wembley.

Mid-July has been set aside as the new annual date for a prestigious showdown that has more recently been staged at the back end of August.

As current holders, thanks to the magnificent underdog victory over St Helens in the capital 11 months ago, The Wire would have been hoping to be defending the silverware at the national stadium this weekend.

But such is the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, Wolves and their rivals remain at the last-16 stage of the competition that will resume next month.

The Wire have been drawn away to Wigan in the sixth round, both teams’ entry point in the cup.

And this game has now been confirmed as taking place at the John Smith's Stadium in Huddersfield on Saturday, August 22, at 2.30pm live on BBC1.

The Challenge Cup has brought so many fond memories for Wire fans since 2009.

In the years since 2009 Warrington Wolves have certainly been the cup kings, enjoying their best run of form in the competition in their entire history.

The Wire have tasted Wembley glory four times, in 2009 against Huddersfield, 2010 and 2012 against Leeds, and 2019 against St Helens.

They also reached the final in 2018 against Catalans Dragons and 2016 against Hull.

Warrington fans headed to the capital in their droves for all six showdowns and today, on what should have been cup final day 2020, we're celebrating those memories.
