A SHOPLIFTER who stole thousands of pounds worth of goods from a town centre store has been jailed.

Sarah Gillam pinched an estimated £2,500 of fragrances from Boots in Golden Square Shopping Centre on Saturday, June 6.

The 43-year-old was arrested when she returned to the same store a week later and was recognised by security staff.

When searched, she was found to be carrying a foil-lined bag – typically used in order to avoid detection by shoplifting alarms.

Gillam, from Liverpool, admitted theft and going equipped for theft at Warrington Magistrates Court on Monday, June 15.

The defendant also pleaded to two counts of breaching a suspended sentence and failing to comply with supervision requirements.

These orders were handed down by the courts earlier this year for a series of thefts in the Merseyside area, in which hundreds of pounds worth of jewellery, cosmetics, alcohol and food was stolen from high street names including Marks and Spencer, Next and Superdrug.

Gilliam was jailed for 20 weeks by the magistrates and told to pay a victim surcharge of £128.
