PEEL Ports has suspended tolls at Warburton Toll Bridge for safety reasons following the coronavirus outbreak.

Toll operators have recently been wearing gloves as fears mount over the pandemic.

However, concerns have been raised over the safety of drivers crossing the bridge, near Lymm, who have been handing over money and getting change.

But site owner Peel, which has been following Government guidance closely, has now made the decision to remove the charges.

“It is for this reason that we have made the decision to suspend the toll at Warburton Bridge.

“The barriers will be lifted with immediate effect and this position will remain until it is safe to resume normal operations.”

Peel has previously said, due to an Act of Parliament, there is a legal obligation to charge everyone who crosses the bridge – with the toll priced at 12p one way and 25p for a day ticket. Annual passes are also available.

The company has, in the past, said toll revenue goes towards the maintenance of the bridge, repairs to the carriageway, utilities and services.
