THE victim of a stabbing outside a McDonald’s restaurant nearly lost his hand after being attacked with a machete.

A 24-year-old man suffered ‘significant’ injuries after the incident outside the Winwick Road fast food branch shortly before 3.30am on Saturday, March 7.

He was stood outside the McDonald’s at the junction with Folly Lane with a group of friends when he was approached by an unknown white man.

Police say this attacker then produced a large knife from down his trousers and began his assault.

And horrific details of the incident have now emerged.

The Warrington Guardian understands that the weapon used was a 14-inch machete, causing gruesome injuries to the victim’s wrist.

He had to undergo a 10-hour operation in order to save his hand after being rushed to Whiston Hospital.

But the man, from Wigan, may still need to undergo a partial amputation, according to sources.

Jordan Hughes, of Calgarth Avenue in Bewsey, was arrested in connection with the attack later on Saturday.

The 21-year-old has since been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

He appeared at Warrington Magistrates Court yesterday morning, Monday, in order to face these charges.

Hughes will now be brought before Liverpool Crown Court next month, and has been remanded into custody until that date.

This incident was one of two stabbings reported on Winwick Road within hours on Friday night.

Another 24-year-old man was attacked by two offenders as he walked through Brickfields Park in Orford at around 9pm on March 6.

The pair, who were armed with a knife, chased their victim onto the A49 before fleeing the area.

He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Aintree Hospital, but was in a stable condition on Saturday.

Warrington Guardian:

Winwick Road was closed in both directions after the stabbing, with nearby roads gridlocked after the Super League match between Warrington Wolves and Castleford Tigers at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

“As part of our enquiries we’re keen to hear from anyone who witnessed either of the incidents or anyone with any information which may assist with our investigation.

“The same goes for anyone who was driving in the area at the time of the incidents and thinks they may have dashcam footage which may be relevant to the investigation.

“Additional officers will be out and about on patrol in the local area over the coming days and I would encourage anyone with any information, or any concerns, to speak to them.

“I’d urge anyone with any information, no matter how small, to contact us on 101.”
