WARRINGTON looks set to host a finish for one of the stages of the world class Tour of Britain bike race in September.

The matter will come before the council’s cabinet for approval on January 13.

This year's prestigious cycling event will take place between September 6 and 13.

Previously the likes of Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Julian Alaphilippe have competed in the event.

It will take place just weeks after the end of the Tokyo Olympics.

A proposal, which is currently in development, would see a finish line located in the town centre, near the Town Hall.

The route would provide an opportunity for residents to watch elite cyclists from around the world race on the streets of Warrington.

The tour was last in Warrington in 2012 when it went through the likes of Culcheth and Lymm.

If approved, the council would enter into a contract with the Tour of Britain Ltd committing it to deliver the event in partnership with tour organisers Sweetspot.

But Tour of Britain Ltd would retain overall responsibility.

The proposed route is for stage five of the race.

It is planned that the tour will contribute to the delivery of a range of corporate priorities for the borough, including growing the economy and creating a ‘place to be proud of’.

In a report which will go before the cabinet, council leader Cllr Russ Bowden says the event provides a unique opportunity to promote the town and to give residents the opportunity to have a 'world-class' event on their doorstep.

The cabinet is recommended to approve the recommendation to host a finish of one of the stages.

Once the route is confirmed, organisers will be arranging communications with residents and businesses directly on the route that will be impacted.

In addition, key partners will receive a range of communications or be involved in event planning as required.
