BIRCHWOOD Fire Station are asking people to be vigilant when having fires and barbecues near to grassland.
This follows a call out yesterday, Thursday, in which their quick actions prevented a fire in a farmer’s field in Croft from spreading.
Firefighters attended the small blaze on Winwick Lane at 11.23am, where they found a patch of grass measuring approximately 20 metres by 10 metres alight.
They spent 30 minutes extinguishing the fire and damping down the area down to make it safe.
On their Twitter feed, the station said: “Charlie watch’s quick actions prevented a grass fire from quickly spreading yesterday, caused by a rubbish fire which hadn’t been extinguished.
“During the heatwave please be vigilant and refrain from having fires and barbecues near dry grassland.”
