IT has been such a miserable and wet week that surely we are in for some sunshine this weekend?*

So we have picked out our four highlights of events taking place in Warrington this weekend.

*Nice weather is not guaranteed, but a good day out is.

GREAT SANKEY SUMMER FUN DAY > SATURDAY*
 

Warrington Guardian:

Head to Tim Parry Recreation Ground, to enjoy the fun day with a carnival theme which is sure to delight young and old.

This is the fifth year that Great Sankey Parish Council has organised this popular event and they say this year’s will be the biggest yet.

All the fun starts at 12pm and all rides are free.

Check out inflatables, mini waltzers, zorbs, nerf net arena, bungee trampolines, donkey rides, a climbing wall, circus skills, face painting, stalls and refreshments being served at Park Road Café at the Tim Parry Community Centre.

This year’s stage performances feature up-and-coming band, Zenith, all band members are students from Great Sankey High School. 

*Since this story was first published, this event has been cancelled due to the weather. Instead a mini summer fair will take place on Friday, June 14 between 3.30 and 5.30pm

BAWMING THE THORN > SATURDAY

Warrington Guardian: Bawming the Thorn , Appleton Thorn 2016.

Residents will flock to the tree beside the village church in Appleton Thorn to watch the longstanding tradition of decorating it with flowers and ribbons. 

A parade will leave the village hall on Stretton Road at 12pm, ready for the ceremony at 12.30pm.

This means road closures will be in place along the crossroads from approximately 11.50am until 1pm.

Additional entertainment during the day includes a fairground, climbing wall, beat the goalie, coconut shy and performances from A.T School of Dance, Sharks Elite Cheerleaders, Magic Moments and the village choir.

Stalls will include a tombola, face painting, glitter tattoos, cakes, tea and coffee, sweets, fashion, make up, skin care, fragrances and cards. 

Food and refreshments will also be available and Thorn Inn is offering 10 per cent off all drinks until 5pm. 

THELWALL ROSE QUEEN > SATURDAY

Warrington Guardian:

Disney is the theme for this year's Thelwall Rose Queen.

The annual summer celebration starts at the slightly earlier time of 1pm.

Ten floats will take part in a parade through the village, leaving from Bell Lane.

A massive afternoon of entertainment is then planned on Chaigeley School field.

And if you go to Thelwall before then, 20 scarecrows depicting Disney characters can be seen across the village.
