BIT by bit the Golden Gates have been returning home this week.
After seven months of work, the £500,000 project to restore them is now entering the final stage.
The gates are expected to be fully restored in time for Warrington Walking Day on June 28.
After dismantling and removing the gates in October last year, contractor Hall Conservation has been providing a unique glimpse into the work in their workshops.
September to November 2018
The first stage was to carefully dismantle the gates leaving the footings to the gate posts exposed.
Hall Conservation then:
- Inspected, photographed and agreed repairs to the gate foundations/plinths
- Inspected remaining cast iron components
- Cleaned off existing paint by hand and removed all the debris before immediately applying primer to exposed surfaces.
- Carried out on-site repairs.
From November onwards
Once dismantled, the gates were transported to the contractor’s engineering workshop where they were fully inspected, in conjunction with Ramboll, repaired and repainted.
And in May
Hall Conservation have started to return the gates which will be reconstructed on site with final painting and gilding.
Throughout the process, they have given residents a glimpse in their workshops via their Instagram page.
