A COMMUNITY group is set for one final push to complete work on its base in a DIY SOS-style project.

The Friends of Meadowside was set up last year by parents at Meadowside Community Primary School, establishing food banks, and mental health support as well as giving second-hand items of school uniform out to families in need.

In the past few weeks, it has appealed for help in order to renovate its dilapidated base at the Alder Lane Estate Activities Centre in Orford.

Since then, dozens of tradesmen have volunteered their time and suppliers including Dulux and MKM Building Supplies have donated products used in the refurbishment.

It is hoped that the centre will reopen by Tuesday, April 23, with the Friends desperate to carry on their vital work.

Founder member Mark Davies said: "On Saturday and Sunday we had about 30 trades on site - everything from electricians and plumbers to plasterers.

"The businesses we've had supporting us has been unbelievable, supplying all the materials free of charge.

"It's been absolutely massive.

"We have to be back open by Tuesday because we've got to keep getting food to people.

"At the moment, there are 150 families without food because we're not open.

"Hopefully everything will be completed and signed off my then, fingers crossed."
