AFTER we reported The Blackburne Arms in Orford will be bulldozed and replaced with 63 retirement apartments under plans from Warrington Borough Council, we thought it was time to look back at some of Warrington's other lost pubs.

In 2016 we reported an Orford man had revealed a list of the dozens of pubs frequented by punters as far back as 1874.

Colin Bowden transcribed the list which was dictated to him by his late father and reveals countless pubs of the past and present.

Born in Barnton, John Bowden lived in Percy Street in Whitecross for many years before he died in 1975.

Canberra Square resident Colin said: “My late father lost his sight when I was three years old and while I was living at home he had me write all the old pubs up going back to 1874.

“There are quite a few still going – some of them are still there but quite a few have changed names or have been pulled down.

“I don’t think there will be many people around now that would know quite a few of them.”

In those days the short walk from Winwick Street to Bridge Foot would have been an unrivalled pub crawl.

Colin added: “The list is nearly six pages which shows you just how many pubs were in Warrington.

“They used to say they’d start off at the Lord Rodney with a thimble full of ale – in the next pub you doubled it, and in the next pub you doubled it again.

“By the time you got to Bridge Foot where the Packet House used to be you’d be plastered because there were so many pubs in that one stretch.”

How many watering holes from John’s list do you remember and can you remember any not on the list?
