LORRY drivers using Amazon’s Omega site have sparked anger after parking on residential streets and dumping litter – including a pizza box containing human waste.

Concerns are mounting on the issue, which is being monitored by council and police officers.

Drivers have frequently been spotted parked up on Sophia Drive, yards from Barrow Hall Primary School, as well as Stanhoe Drive.

Nigel Catlow, chairman of Whittle Hall Residents Association, has pointed the finger firmly at lorry drivers using the Amazon site.

He says the online giant has not got enough parking facilities at its warehouse.

Mr Catlow has spoken to some of the workers and has regularly spotted litter dumped around the area – which recently included a dumped pizza box with human waste inside.

He also believes it is crucial to get Lingley Green Avenue to be a weight restricted road.

“There have been incidents of medicine packages being discarded and, recently, a discarded pizza box with human waste in it,” he said.

“People have to walk past this.

“Some of the area around the Omega business area has double yellow lines on the road.

“But where the lorry drivers often park, they are not doing anything illegal as there are no double yellows lines on the road there.

“My goal is to make sure lorries don’t park up in a residential area.

Warrington Guardian:

Concerns have been raised over where lorry drivers are parking in the area

“There are also safeguarding issues due to the school (Barrow Hall Primary School) being so close to where the drivers park.

“The last thing we want is for a road traffic collision to happen.”

Council leader Cllr Russ Bowden has told Mr Catlow residents ‘should not be faced with’ the issue.

Colin Graham, development director at Omega Warrington, is also aware of the situation.

He believes a big part of the problem is that the usual method of the council issuing parking tickets to drivers parked illegally is ‘largely ineffective’ because ‘foreign-based drivers are ignoring’ the penalty notices.

But he confirmed other potential enforcement routes are being assessed.

Mr Graham added: “Inappropriate, and often illegal, HGV parking is not welcomed by Omega Warrington Ltd and we are working with the residents, Warrington Borough Council and the police to try and stamp it out.

“Our managing agents have written to all the Omega occupiers asking them to remind their hauliers that drivers should not be parking on residential roads, outside the primary school, or elsewhere on double yellow lines.

“It’s not rocket science and most drivers abide by the rules.

“We are also looking at what additional measures might be taken to prevent problem parking outside the school (without impinging on access to the school for pupils, teachers and parents).”

It is understood that the drivers are employed by external carriers and haulage firms, rather than being employed by Amazon.

They have been asked to keep the area outside the school and the Royal Mail depot clear.

An Amazon spokesman said: “As a responsible neighbour, we take this matter seriously.

“We immediately informed our carriers about the concerns raised and reminded them of the correct driver behaviour guidelines.

“We expect all of our carriers to comply with those guidelines.”
