LOVE Island star and A&E doctor Alex George attended Culcheth High School yesterday, Thursday, to inspire students to pursue a career in midwifery.

The NHS careers talk was hosted by the former reality TV contestant as part of a project to target the shortage of midwives.

It involved a 30-minute broadcast, organised by Spark Careers, with students from across the UK able to send in questions for a panel to answer.

Culcheth High students submitted questions in advance with Sian Taylor, Isabelle Gall and Lucy Burnham from the school being selected to put their questions to the panel live on the day.

Laura Quicler, careers leader, said: "It was a fantastic success with students learning lots about the job of a midwife, training and entry requirements as well as different qualification pathways to success.

"Students also gained an insight into the day to day workings of a midwife, the good and the bad.

"As careers leader at Culcheth High School, I certainly feel it was a fantastic event and opportunity for our students and am certain it will help them make informed choices for their future.

"I know a few students have swapped contact details with some panel members to help arrange work experience opportunities in the future.

"Students said it was an excellent event in which they have been able to gain a vast amount of information about Midwifery and other NHS Careers as well as gain contacts from some of the panel."

The panel included Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent OBE, chief midwife officer for NHS England, Jonathan Cliffe, midwife at Warrington Hospital, Margaret Nakayaga, a recently qualified midwife at Newham Hospital London and Jessica Perkins, a second year midwifery student at University of Northampton.

The broadcast can be viewed from Monday, April 1 here.
