THE bells of St Wilfrid's Church in Grappenhall and St Thomas' in Stockton Heath will ring out on Sunday at 12.30pm to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The ringers at Grappenhall will be attempting a quarter peal dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives in conflict in particular John Lancelot Smith, a Grappenhall bell ringer who was killed in the First World War.

The second lieutenant from the South Lancashire Regiment died in the Battle of the Somme on August 8, 1916.

He is commemorated on the war memorial within the church.

A quarter peal will also be attempted at Stockton Heath in the evening, starting at around 7pm.

The bells at St Matthew's Stretton will also be sounding out on the day in support of the Ringing Remembers initiative – a campaign Central Council of Church Bell Ringers to mark the Armistice centenary.
