A NEW 'repair cafe' has been set up in Birchwood, allowing members of the public to have their old and broken electronic devices and household items fixed for free.

The Birchwood Repair Cafe is the first of its kind in Warrington - inviting residents to bring in their broken items to have them repaired free of charge by skilled volunteers.

Objects including laptops, electronic gadgets, bikes, clothes, costumes, jewellery and small items of furniture are among those that have had a second lease of life breathed into them since the project was set up in July.

Held at Birchwood Youth and Community Centre once a month, the repair cafe is open to all and donations are welcomed in return for work carried out.

All money raised is put back into the running of the cafe.

Locking Stumps resident Stewart Lever, one of the cafe's founder members, said: "A group of us decided to set up the repair cafe after hearing about the concept and thinking what a great idea it was.

"It works so well because not only does it prevent items from going to landfill, it brings the community together and teaches people new skills.

"It's also the perfect opportunity to sit down, meet new people and enjoy a slice of delicious homemade cake.

"None of it would be feasible without our fantastic team of repairers, meet and greeters and catering volunteers of course - who give up their time to make the repair cafe such a success.

"So far they've repaired everything from bikes and computers to children's toys and clothes."

The next cafe takes place between 10am and 12pm on Saturday, October 20.

Tea, coffee, cakes and refreshments are available on the day.
