THE Warrington Gas Social Club is set to be demolished.

Located on Winwick Road, the social club is currently vacant and is now in an ‘extremely poor state of repair’.

And Cadent Gas, which operates the gasworks, has applied for planning permission to bulldoze the building.

The social club would be replaced by a new portable office building under proposals submitted to Warrington Borough Council.

Construction work would also see the social club’s two entrance gates, fronting onto Winwick Road, removed and the voids bricked up.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the plans said: “The existing building is currently used as a social club, but is in a poor state of repair and is therefore in the need of demolition.

“The proposed new building will be used as an office facility by Cadent Gas staff, and will be located within the same footprint as the social club building which is proposed to be demolished - the new modular building will be mainly obscured from public view when viewed from Winwick Road, due to the existing eastern boundary wall."

Demolition of the gas social club, which has been closed for a number of years, would also involve the removal of asbestos from the building.

Cadent Gas’ design and access statement added: “Following completion of the works, the new modular building will have an overall more appealing appearance than the dilapidated condition of the former social club.”

A consultation on the plans runs until Wednesday, October 31.
