A REPAIR stall on Warrington Market is appealing for donations of old pairs of shoes that it can fix up and donate to the town’s homeless.

Moran’s of Warrington is asking residents to donate unwanted pairs of shoes, which it will repair for free before donating them to the Room at the Inn and the Y Project.

And the appeal has already drawn a big reaction from good samaritans.

Stall owner Ste White said: “The homelessness problem is horrendous, and it’s only getting worse with the cuts that are being made - it’s terrible.

“It seems like the charity is always looking for donations, and we can be of use to help someone.

“When we repair a pair of shoes and someone doesn’t come back for them, we usually take them down to the charity shop after six months because it’s better than just binning them.

“But the shoes don’t directly go to someone in need.

“This is a nice way to help someone directly.

“We can get the shoes in and do whatever needs doing to them before taking them to the charity.”

Ste hopes that the appeal will be a timely one, helping those on the streets in time for the cold winter.

The Latchford resident, who took over the shoe repair and key-cutting business from his father-in-law nine years ago, added: “The appeal has been going well.

“It can only be as successful as the amount of people who support it and bring shoes in, but we always get a lot of support from our customers.

“We’re doing it now to help people on the streets in time for winter.

“Last winter was a particularly bad one - I park over in Howley every morning and walk to work from there, and you’d see people freezing under blankets when it was snowing.

“I wanted to do something for a Warrington charity, and a lot of people like to support them.

“Everyone supports our business, so it’s nice for us to be able to support Warrington people.”
