THE council has come under fire for failing to give residents sufficient notice about road closures as part of the M62 improvement scheme.

At the end of April, the Warrington Guardian revealed how work has now started on the southbound widening of Burtonwood Road.

As a result the northbound part of the road was closed on April 29 from the roundabout at Whittle Avenue and Burtonwood Road to the new junction of Charon Way.

This closure will be in operation until January.

Kingswood Road will still be open for vehicles turning left off Burtonwood Road and also left out onto Burtonwood Road.

Other access into Kingswood Road estate will be via Westbrook Way and Westbrook Crescent.

But many residents posted their frustration about the scheme, which was developed to reduce congestion and increase the junction’s capacity to support future growth in jobs and houses.

Charlotte Rainford said: “There’s not a single sign anywhere to tell you this will be closing.

“The whole redesign of this road is a joke.”

Rachel Jones said: “Absolutely no signage to say it’s closing. Hundreds of cars use that road to get to work.”

Helen Newns added: “They have signs saying ‘residents only’ through Kingswood, it should be residents only through Callands as well.”

A spokesman for Warrington Borough Council said: “As soon as confirmation of the date of the closure was confirmed by contractors, the council notified local media and published the news on the council’s social media channels.

“The council also immediately contacted the 300 people who had signed up to receive updates on the scheme.

“The fact that the road was going to be closed was included in the Omega newsletter and was part of the consultation on the scheme and the details were available at drop-in sessions at Kingswood Community Centre and Burtonwood Library. The scheme is signposted on three roadside information boards.”
