LABOUR and the Liberal Democrats have selected their candidates for the Lymm South borough council by-election.

Warrington Foodbank volunteer Trish Cockayne will contest the seat for Labour, while parish councillor Anna Fradgley will battle it for the Liberal Democrats.

The election, which was called following the death of the town's joint longest-serving councillor Sheila Woodyatt, will take place on April 19.

An election to fill Sheila's seat in the South ward of Lymm Parish Council is also set for the same day.

Warrington South MP Faisal Rashid joined Ms Cockayne in the village to launch her campaign.

She said: "After eight years of Tory cuts, equalling £122 million in Warrington, I believe people have had enough of this cruel Government.

"The failed economic experiment of austerity is holding so many people back and the cuts are impacting on the services that we all rely on.

"In times like these it has never been more important to make sure Lymm has an authentic voice speaking up for us when decisions are being made in the Town Hall.

"Here in the village itself, we have representatives who all voted for the Labour council's budget but aren't part of the important decision-making processes that affect us all.

"I can be part of those considerations and speak up for Lymm and its people with a voice that will count."

The Liberal Democrats selected their candidates for the borough and parish by-elections at a hustings meeting on Saturday.

Mrs Fradgley said: "I have helped set up the Neighbourhood Planning Group, on behalf of the parish council, which will shape Lymm's economic, environmental, housing and infrastructure needs.

"I feel passionately that we must save our green belt land yet allow sensible development that has the support of the community."

Joan Stocker will fight for the seat on the parish council for the party.

Cllr Ian Marks, chairman of the town's Liberal Democrats, added: "Our parish candidate Joan Stocker has a wealth of experience which would be of great value to Lymm Parish Council.

"Before moving to Lymm she served as a parish councillor in Windermere for 20 years.

"She was also a Cumbria county councillor for many years being responsible for education before becoming deputy leader.

"In the village, she is active in a large number of organisations."
