MORE than 100 events will be taking place in Warrington to celebrate creativity in all its forms.

The town is taking part in ‘Get Creative’, a nationwide BBC-coordinated campaign to celebrate and support everyday creativity happening in homes and public spaces.

Warrington Borough Council and partners have created an extensive calendar of community events, including arts and crafts sessions, dance, music workshops, photography, reading events and more from Saturday to Sunday, March 25.

A special launch event gets the festival underway on Saturday.

The Old Fish Market will play host to a community choir and dance groups, while the museum will offer up mosaic-making.

Warrington library welcomes leading British poet, Clare Shaw, for a special poetry writing workshop and families can get stuck in with a ‘Big Spring Lego Build’ at Warrington Market.

It paves the way to a nine-day feast of creativity in Warrington, with many events free.

Cllr Dan Price, Warrington Borough Council’s executive board member for culture and partnerships, said: “It’s going to be an action-packed nine days, giving everyone the chance to try their hand at something new and creative, at venues across the borough.

“It’s fantastic to see so many arts, culture and community groups working together to deliver such a varied and exciting programme of events for people to enjoy. It’s a great example of how, working collaboratively, we can deliver a bright cultural future for Warrington.”

Meanwhile, Warrington’s libraries are hosting a range of events throughout the festival – from learning to code, Shakespeare craft activities and story sessions, to rhyme times, knit and natter, read to relax events and even ukulele lessons.

Cllr Tony Higgins, Warrington Borough Council’s executive board member for leisure and community, added: “These are exciting times for our libraries service, with a range of work going on to make them a real focal point for our communities.

“That’s why I’m delighted that libraries across the borough are playing such an active role in this year’s Get Creative Festival.

“There will be so much for people of all ages to enjoy, from reading groups and arts and crafts, to music, coding and story times. Get Creative will showcase our libraries at their best, so make sure you get involved.”

LifeTime, an independent organisation which works with residents over 50, has a community choir which will be performing at the opening ceremony on Saturday at the Golden Square.

And throughout the week, LifeTime’s groups will be open for people to try the likes of stitch and craft and zumba gold at The Gateway Cafe in Sankey Street.

Warrington Disability Partnership is holding numerous events, including a floristry workshop, Easter craft and afternoon tea events, an arts and crafts drop-in and a photography competition.

BloomingArt, which hosts art classes and workshops, is combining Get Creative with International Earth Day this year. So there will be a full week of art based around recycling.

Meanwhile, Warrington Market will be capitalising on the success of its recent family and fantasy events. As part of Saturday’s Big Spring Lego Build, including a huge free Lego play area, there will also be Easter bunny workshops, craft activities, Lego displays and Lego theme traders selling all manner of geeky merchandise.

Then the market will be going out of this world on the Saturday, March 24, for the arrival of Doctor Who.

Intergalactic activities include rocket building workshops and interactive displays while Doctor Who shares stories about the galaxy. The festival ends on Sunday, March 25, with a ‘memory walk’ around Victoria Park, to raise awareness of dementia and raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The walk will be followed by a craft session – giving participants the chance to make a piece of art based on the forget-me-not.
