It's time to pit two wheels against four.

I cycled into work today later than usual at rush hour.

I left home in Widnes at 8.28am and go to the office at 8.56am - a door-to-door journey time of 26 minutes.

It's just under seven miles to the office in Bridge Street.

I was pushing reasonably hard, but I do that anyway, and by today I'm usually feeling a bit tired.

Next week I'm going to time myself making the same trip by car.

It won't be an exact comparison.

If I drive I have to park 10 minutes from town and walk the rest to avoid the roving traffic wardens.

And the schools aren't in at the moment, and parents make a huge contribution to congestion.

But next week I'll let you know what is quicker - healthy and ecological cycling, or evil car driving.
