I'm getting 'regulars' on my route into town.

I leave at pretty much the same time each day (around 7.30am) and usually pass the same cycle commuters.

Here's a guide to the people I see:

* British Eagle man. An older guy and a deadly rival who rides a British Eagle mountain bike from Widnes to Warrington. Rarely seen, as he goes the same way I do.

Recognised in winter by his bobble hat.

Prone to spitting as a sign of victory over a rival male (i.e. me).

* Crab man. A big guy usually spotted near Fiddlers Ferry heading from Warrington towards Widnes.

Hunched over the handlebars of his bike.

With his posture and big gloves, looks like a crab trying to mount to a limpet.

Almost always spotted.

* Giffer. A bloke in his 50s who also rides past Fiddlers Ferry, without any bright gear or helmet, and looks permanently seconds away from saying hello to the wheels of a HGV.

* Shades man. A proper cyclist in his 20s or 30s usually wearing red gear and a pair of shades, and usually seen powering into Widnes from Warrington.

* The angry postie. A harmless but scary looking creature.

Almost always seen on the Sankey side of the cycleway near Crosfields rounabout, on one of the Royal Mail bikes heading west.

Can turn an apple rotten with a glance.

* Cycle girl. Usually spotted yards behind the angry postie, though apparently unrelated.

Rides a too big commuter bike.

Looks like a college student.

* Flouresecnt jacket man. Seen heading into Warrington from Penketh on a red bike with a reflective yellow jacket.

Quick despite his old looking gear.

PS Other cyclists, especially ones in racing gear, have said a cheery 'hello' to me a few times lately.

One did it this morning as he went passed around The Sportsman's arms on Warrington Road.

It's great to feel a sense of cameraderie on the road.
