TRAFFIC heading into Warrington is heavily congested after heavy sleet and snow showers this morning.
The showers began shortly after 7.30am and carried on at various intervals, leading to delays for commuters heading into to the town.
Cheshire Police have warned of delays in Winwick and surrounding areas of Warrington due to snow and ice and are advising to avoid where possible, as road closures are expected.
The wintry weather came after drivers across the region were urged to take extra care by the Highways Agency.
Following Met Office warnings for sleet, snow and high winds across the north, the Highways Agency issued an Amber ‘be aware’ alert for snow today.
Combined with strong northerly winds gusting between 40mph and 50mph the snow showers could cause drifting in places – potentially leading to poor visibility, difficult driving conditions and traction issues for some vehicles.
