GREAT-GRANDMOTHER Margaret Isherwood said she was very proud to be recognised at Buckingham Palace – but even better was her wink from Prince William.
The Fairfield resident was awarded an MBE for her services to adult learning.
Margaret achieved a degree in holistic therapy, runs the elder social group at St Margaret’s Church and has been an Age Concern volunteer for 20 years.
She said: "It was very nice meeting Prince William. He asked if I enjoyed the work I did and if it was tiring.
"Later, when he was getting up to leave, he looked down at me and gave me a lovely wink. I was thrilled to be getting the attention of a charming gentleman at 96. I think it was better than getting the medal."
Margaret, who first started learning new skills through Priestley College’s adult learning courses 11 years ago, was also impressed by Buckingham Palace.
She added: "I knew it was large but it's larger than life and when you walk through the courtyard it gives you this wonderful feeling.
"I'm very proud to receive the MBE. I don't know who nominated me but I would like to say thank you very much to them."
