A HUSBAND and wife team are on the ride of their life after swapping the Appleton terrain for Cambodia in a charity bike ride which started this week.
Martin and Karen Evans, of Bellcast Close, are cycling 400 kilometres from Vietnam to Cambodia, after flying out on Sunday to raise money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.
Pedal power will see the pair, along with friend Fiona Buckley, ride from Saigon all the way to Siem Reap in the intense heat and humidity within five days but Martin was quietly confident of what will lie ahead.
“To say we’ve never done anything on this scale before is an understatement,” said 48-year-old finance director Martin.
“Not only is it by far the furthest distance I’ve ever ridden but Karen and Fiona have had to buy bikes just to be able to do this.
‘We know our Vietnam challenge will be a huge ask’
Martin Evans
“We will find out just how tough it will be when we get out there but I think we will be fine, at least I hope we are.”
As part of the tough training schedule, the trio recently took part in The Christie Foundation’s bike ride from Manchester to Blackpool.
“It was tough and is less than a quarter of the distance we need to ride in November,” admitted Martin.
“We know our Vietnam challenge will be a huge ask – but it will be a fantastic experience and will raise money for a wonderful charity.”
