FIGURES revealing performance up to September 2006 show the borough council's development control department now stands within the top 100 out of the 365 councils in England for the speed of consideration of major applications.
The council is rated seventh for the determination of minor applications and at 25 for the determination of other applications.
Clr Brian Axcell, board member for environment services, said: "The improvements in performance reflect effort across the whole team and ways of handling applications which improve efficiency.
"This has required encouraging those people submitting applications to make sure that submissions are accurate and complete.
"It also involves promoting discussion before applications are made to ensure that problems, which may cause delays, are recognised at the earliest opportunity."
