WARRINGTON correspondence chess team have been crowned British champions for the first time since Chris Haggett assembled the team in 1983.

And Warrington's team of eight recorded their achievement with only one loss in 16 games, recording seven wins and eight draws.

Moves are made by post or e-mail against players from teams in the same division across the country and there are strict time controls in place for each play.

The team, captained by Gary Boswell, was originally composed of members of the Penketh British Legion side, which was the original Warrington Chess Club.

As Warrington moved up the divisions, more players were recruited from further a field to bolster the ranks.

The 2006 team was made up of Martin Cooksey, Neil Blackburn, Stan Greyland, Gary Windebank, Fred Fraser, Derek Gallmore, Frank Reynolds and Griff Parsonage.
