THE Highways Agency say a serious crash on the M6 has now been cleared after three cars were involved in a collision with a lorry.
Long tailbacks were reported to Wigan following the incident at 7.30am.
Police say the accident happened on the southbound carriageway at junction 21 for the A57, just after the Thelwall Viaduct.
One car went into the central reservation and highways officers and other emergency services attended the scene.
A woman driver has been taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to police.
HA officers said all lanes on the southbound carriageway were closed for around an hour.
A diesel spill also had to be cleared using sand.
The collision was cleared at 9.20am, with all lanes now open again, says the HA.
Congestion meant it was taking more than an hour for drivers to get through the delays.
Traffic is now moving again, according to the HA.
