ALDI, Costa Coffee, Greggs and Coral bookmakers are among the names being lined up for a ‘community hub’ development on the former Fordton Leisure Centre site.

Plans have been submitted to Warrington Borough Council detailing the redevelopment of the land after the centre was knocked down following the opening of Orford Park Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub last year.

And the scheme will see a state-of-the-art Aldi store take up position next to Winwick Road with a Joseph Holt pub and restaurant built on the corner of the plot which borders Chiltern Avenue and Sandy Lane West.

A drive-thru Costa Coffee along with a building housing three shops - with Greggs and Coral taking up two of those - will also look out over the roundabout under plans for the scheme.

In the design statement for the scheme it says: “Following the demolition of the former Fordton Leisure Centre the opportunity has been taken to provide the local community with a mixed use development that will operate as a local community hub providing everyday goods and services at a local level.

“Having a good mix of uses on the site will help to cater for local needs and also provide a range of jobs, creating a local hub which is vital to creating sustainable places.”

At the time when Warrington Borough Council approved the sale of the land to developers CPG Property Developments Ltd councillors said they hoped the scheme would compliment plans for redevelopment of Alban Retail Park.

But Clr Mike Hannon (LAB - Orford) said at a council meeting he was keen to stress the council was still focused on the impact on the retail heart of the town centre.

“I’m looking at this as a neighbourhood hub,” he added. “Everything is being tested to see if it’s going to have an effect on the town centre and so far officers are happy it is not going to do that.”
