DRIVING with beer goggles' is not to be encouraged under any circumstances.

But that is what Cheshire Fire Service hopes young drivers will do on Saturday as part of a programme of initiatives to promote National Road Safety Week.

Staff from the service are supporting events across Warrington promoted by Brake, the road safety charity.

On Saturday, LA Bowl will be offering the opportunity to drive a Formula One simulator - with and without beer goggles' that impair your ability to drive.

The special event has been staged with the help of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and the Warrington Drugs and Alcohol Action Team.

And, on Friday, an on-site Drive Survive' course is being staged at Warrington Collegiate by a partnership including the fire service, Warrington Borough Council and Cheshire Police. It will be filmed by media students and will involve a dramatic recreation of a road traffic collision.

Martin Dowle, the service's road traffic collision (RTC) reduction manager, said: "We now rescue six times as many people out of RTCs as we do from fires. The aim of all these initiatives is to raise road safety awareness, particularly among young people who are those most at risk."

Alexandra Wilson, road safety project manager and co-ordinator of the Impaired Driving Partnership, said: "Reducing the numbers of people killed or seriously injured on Cheshire's roads is a difficult task, but by working together we are sure to make a greater impact."
