It may not be convertible weather, but there’s no harm in investing in a beautiful Audi A5 cabriolet in preparation for next year’s scorching summer.
Perhaps that’s a little too optimistic, but you never know.
However, in tune with this country’s ‘changeable’ weather, the A5’s lightweight roof opens in just 15 seconds and closes in 17 (at speeds of up to 30mph) and the optional head-level heating and solar heat-reflecting upholstery ensure that it’s enjoyable to have the roof down all year round.
Engine choices include a turbocharged, direct-injected 2.0 TFSI or 3.2 TFSI petrol or a 3.0-litre diesel. Petrol models come with front-wheel drive while the diesel has quattro four-wheel drive.
New fuel-saving stop-and-start technology, which stops the engine when idle, is featured on the A5 Cabriolet and there’s also a high performance S5 version.
I drove the 3.0 diesel, which is probably the best choice if you have a high mileage, and it feels particularly at home on the motorway. It is also the quickest model in the A5 Cabriolet line-up and gains speed effortlessly.
Pumping out 236bhp and 271lb-ft of torque, the steering is nice and light and the ride is extremely smooth and comfortable.
With the roof folded, the A5 Cabriolet has 320 litres of boot space and there’s plenty of room for four adults, with lots of leg room in the back.
Audis are among the best cars around for perceived quality. Standard equipment includes 17” alloys, front and rear fog lights, six-speaker audio system with CD and aux-in socket, automatic seat-belt feeder, climate control, electric front windows, rake-and-reach adjustable steering and chrome detailing.
Stability control, front and side airbags, Isofix child seat fittings, alarm and immobiliser are also fitted as standard. Other safety features included are anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control (ESP).
For a convertible, the A5 Cabriolet is a spacious and practical car that is a joy to drive – whatever the weather.
