Warrington Art Group

By Clive Stannard

THE group brought its winter season to a close with a social evening which included supper and a guest speaker.

At its penultimate meeting there was a demonstration by the well-known artist, Terry Harrison.

Other distinguished demonstrators during the season have included local practitioner Mike Hoyles, renowned maritime artist Ossie Jones and Mavis Nwokobia. In between the monthly demonstrations members have met to exchange ideas and experience.

A summer programme of outdoor sketching began on Monday with a visit to Walton Gardens.

The group’s annual exhibition is at Tatton Park from August 24 to September 7 and the first meeting of the next winter season will be on Monday, September 9.

The group meets on alternate Mondays at Grappenhall Youth and Community Centre in Bellhouse Lane, Grappenhall.

Marlfield WI

OUR speaker for April telephoned the day before to say he was ill, but John Ashby from Grappenhall Library stepped in.

He gave a most interesting report on setting up the new library in Albert Road.

As the library is to be our home for the next few months it was very interesting to look round the new amenities and thanks are given to John for his most informative talk at such short notice.

The speaker at our meeting on May 20 will be Malcolm Eldridge, talking about Alpine Wild Flowers.

The meeting will again be at the library at 7.30pm and all visitors are very welcome.

Lymm Jubilee WI

By Heather Warren

LYMM Jubilee were transported back to the 80s, when we were entertained by a DVD of our entertainment group performing their Barnum production.

Cakes were made by the committee to help give a party feel after the serious discussion on the resolution on Decline of High Streets and Town Centres, going forward to our National Conference in Cardiff.

A trip to The Midland Hotel in Morecambe has been organised.

High tea has been arranged at this beautifully renovated art deco venue. We will stop off at a garden centre en-route.

Lymm Jubilee has had several new members lately, two of whom are daughters of founder members, as one of them said: “We are the committee of the future.”

We are to take part in the Lymm May Queen festival with our float entitled ‘That’s Entertainment’.

Warrington Ramblers

By Alan Rainford

ON Sunday, May 4 the group visited Thirlspot in the Lake District, located at the foot of the Helvellyn screes, by the side of Thirlmere and somewhere between Ambleside and Keswick.

Other than the King’s Head there is little else here man made to spoil it.

Kevin Mather persuaded two others to join him on what can only described as a commando yomp. He challenged them over 13 miles and 5,400 feet. The climb took the group up into the clouds, high winds and teeming rain over Helvellyn before their dropping down via Sticks Pass and they returned looking quite fresh! Did they actually do it?

The other three groups attempted something less demanding. Groups B and C concentrated on walks over High Rigg while the D group scaled Great How, each group having commenced its walk along the banks of Thirlmere.

All groups concluded their walks high up on the slopes of Helvellyn with magnificent views, for by now the weather had cleared somewhat, up St John’s in the Vale to Blencathra, towards Keswick dominated by Skiddaw and across Thirlmere to High Seat and Armboth Fell.

The aforementioned King’s Head enabled experiences to be shared.

Needless to say the fells were bathed in sunlight as we drove south Want to join us? Our next walk is at Minsterley, south of Shrewsbury. Walking here is not as demanding as the Lake District but there is an interesting geological feature known as The Stiperstones. This quartzite outcrop is some miles long but allows glorious views across the Marches to the west and in an easterly direction to the Long Mynd.

If you are interested in joining us call Alan Rainford on 602719.

Freemasons

By Derek Hunt

THE creation of a museum about Freemasonry in Warrington is helping to ‘debunk’ some of the images people have of the organisation.

This was the message given to more than 100 local Freemasons by Chris Eyres when they attended the chairman’s dinner in Warrington Masonic Hall.

Chris said that since the creation of the museum in part of the Winmarleigh Street building several organisations have been welcomed to visit the displays including historic societies, Women’s Institutes and Probus.

Chris, who is chairman of the Warrington Group of Lodges, said: “This is a good public relations exercise which debunks some of the myths people have about us and also puts the hall in a good light. I am sure this will start to bear fruit in terms of new members and outside bookings for the hall.”

Chris reported that there would be changes in group officials during May. While he would remain as chairman, the new vice chairman will be Andy Barton with John McIntyre appointed as group secretary.

Chris praised the work carried out for the group during a nineyear period by Colin Boardman who had served as group secretary for seven years and vice chairman for two. He presented Colin with a gift and said the group was indebted to him for all his efficient and effective work.
